The Microsoft Turing team is an innovative research and engineering team working on state-of-the-art deep learning models to power end user experiences across the company. Senior Applied Scientists and software engineers in the Turing team work together to push the boundaries of large-scale deep learning models on Turing’s world class distributed training infrastructure. The team is pioneering search, and the core copilot experiences across Microsoft’s ecosystem.
In addition to ensuring that Microsoft is pushing the state-of-the-art large-scale models, the Turing team also works on improving experiences across Microsoft’s products and services by working on high value scenarios. The Turing team has shipped capabilities across all of many Microsoft scenarios including M365 Copilots, Bing Chat, semantic search for enterprise and knowledge management, quick reply on Outlook, Smart Compose features in Word, image enhancement models, image search models, as well as many other features across Office, Bing, and Xbox. Most recently, the Turing team launched Analyst Agent in M365 Copilot—one of the first reasoning-powered agents of its kind.

What you'll work on
- Develop proficiency in one or more specialized sub‑areas while building broad knowledge across a wider research domain. Apply relevant research methodologies, deepen understanding of key services, platforms, or domains, and identify product opportunities by tracking industry trends and emerging applied technologies.
- Review business requirements and incorporate research to meet business goals. You‘ll provide strategic direction for the kinds of data used to solve problems and apply deep subject matter knowledge to support business impact.
- Participate in onboarding of team members and assist in developing academics to be members of multidiscipline teams. You’ll identify new research talent to join Microsoft and collaborate with the academic community to develop the recruiting pipeline.
- Document work in progress and experimentation results and share findings to promote innovation. You’ll also use your deep understanding of fairness and bias to contribute to ethics and privacy policies related to research processes and data collection.

- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics predictive analytics, research)
- OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR equivalent experience.
What we're looking for
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
*Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 3+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).
- Proficient ability and effectiveness working end-to-end in a challenging technical problem domain (plan, design, execution, continuous release, and service operation).
- 3+ years experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers), at conferences like ACL, EMNLP, SIGKDD, AAAI, WSDM, COLING, WWW, NIPS, ICASSP, etc.
- 3+ years' experience in applying deep learning techniques and drive end-to-end AI product development (Search, Recommendation, NLP, Document Understanding, etc), and communicating technical details clearly across organizational boundaries.

Applied Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
